Artist Biography For Jeanne Baxtresser

Jeanne Baxtresser Is An American Flutist. She Was The Principal Flutist Of The New York Philharmonic For 15 Years. She Is Presently The Vira I. Heinz Professor Of Flute At Carnegie Mellon University. Ms. Baxtresser Studied With Julius Baker At Juilliard. She Won The Position Of First Flutist With The Montreal Symphony Orchestra When Then-Director Franz Paul Decker Impressed By Her Talent And Impeccable Playing Hired Her. During Her Tenure With The MSO She Married Principal Bassoonist David Caroll. After Several Years With The MSO Ms. Baxtresser Auditioned For And Won The Position As Principal Flutist With The Toronto Symphony Orchestra. It Was During This Time She And Conductor Andrew Davis Collaborated On Several Recordings. Several Years Later Upon Julius Baker's Retirement Ms. Baxtresser Was Invited To Take Up The Position Of Principal Flutist With The New York Philharmonic. At First She Declined The Position Saying "My Situation Here Toronto Is Far Too Attractive." Eventually She Capitulated And Accepted The Prestigious Position With The New York Philharmonic. After Several Years With The NYP Ms. Baxtresser Retired From The Position And Has Since Devoted Her Time To Performing And Teaching. She Has Taught At Manhattan School Of Music Juilliard New England Conservatory And Carnegie Mellon University Where She Continues To Teach.
