Artist Biography For Ignacy Feliks Dobrzyński

Composer Conductor Pianist And Pedagogue Born 25 February 1807 In Romanov In Volhynia Died 9 October 1867 In Warsaw.
Dobrzyński First Attended The Jesuit College In Romanov And Then In 1817-21 The Podolian Gymnasium In Winnitsa. He Learnt Music From His Father Ignacy The Violinist Composer And Conductor And From 1825 From Józef Elsner In Warsaw First Privately And In 1826-8 As A Student Of The Main School Of Music. Having Started To Compose In Winnitsa Dobrzyński Spent The Rest Of His Live In Warsaw Where He Composed Taught Organized Music Groups And Sought Backing For Symphony Concerts With Himself As The Conductor. His Piano Teaching Skills Were Widely Recognized And Sennewald Published His Szkoła Na Fortepian / School For The Piano Warsaw 1845 . In 1835 His Symphony No. 2 In C-Minor Op. 15 Earned Him The Second Prize At The Vienna Composing Competition. It Was Performed In Warsaw Certain Movements Only And In Leipzig With Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Conducting Sennewald Published It In Warsaw In 1862 The Two-Piano Version As Symfonia Charakterystyczna W Duchu Muzyki Polskiej / Symphony In The Characteristic Spirit Of Polish Music. In 1836-8 Dobrzyński Composed His First Opera MONBAR CZYLI FLIBUSTIEROWIE / Monbar Or The Filibusters Aka "Freebooters" Op. 30. Its Parts Were Played In Concerts In Warsaw Poznań Berlin And Dresden And Its Stage Premiere Took Place In The Warsaw Teatr Wielki In 1863. In 1841-3 He Taught Music At The Alexandrian Institute For The Education Of Maidens. In March 1845 He Embarked Upon An Artistic Trip Visiting Berlin Leipzig Dresden Munich Bonn Frankfurt On The Main And Vienna And Presenting His Compositions. He Stayed In Berlin For A Longer While Earning His Living As A Music Teacher Barred From Returning To Poland Due To His Composing Of A Few Patriotic Songs Including Do Matki Polki / To A Polish Mother To A Poem By Adam Mickiewicz. He Did Not Return To Warsaw Until September 1847. In 1852 He Was Made Opera Manager At The Teatr Wielki An Appointment He Was To Hold For Less Than A Year. In The Following Years He Conducted The Opera's Orchestra At Symphony Concerts At The Merchants' Chamber And Other Premises. October 1857 Saw Him Organise The Ignacy Feliks Dobrzyński's Polish Orchestra Its Members Including Distinguished Musicians Of The Teatr Wielki's Orchestra And Its Schedule Providing For Weekly Concerts At The New Arcadia In Marszałkowska Street. In 1858-60 Dobrzyński Sat On A Committee Established To Found The Institute Of Music As Well As Being A Member Of The Lvov Music Society. After 1860 Due To Poor Health He Gradually Withdrew From Warsaw's Music Life Devoting Himself Exclusively To Composing.
