Black Was Born In Chicago Illinois To Jewish Parents Jill And Robert Schwartz And Grew Up In Hillsborough New Jersey. His Parents Divorced When He Was Three Years Old. When He Was Seven His Father Died During Neurological Surgery Following A Mysterious Assault. The Surname Schwartz German And Yiddish In Origin Translates To 'black' In English. His "favorite Quote" In His High School Yearbook Was "My Life Is What I Make Of It And That's As Much As I Know." By Combining An Off-The-Wall Sense Of Humor With Dry Deadpan Wit Michael Ian Black Has Risen Rapidly Through The Ranks Of Comedy Since His Debut On MTV's The State. Black Joined The Show During Its Inaugural Year In 1993 Having Recently Left New York University's Tisch School Of The Arts Before Graduation A Decision He Would Later Mock On The Standup Comedy Album I Am A Wonderful Man . Mixing Sketch Comedy With Clips Of Popular Alternative Music The Series Ran From 1993 To 1995 At Which Point It Was Sold To CBS And Unceremoniously Canned After A Make-Or-Break Halloween Episode Fell Short Of The Network's Expected Ratings.
