Artist Biography For Kiya & Ziya Tabassian

Kiya Tabassian Was Born In 1976 In Tehran Iran Immigrating To Quebec In 1990. He Has Been Trained In Persian Music Under Reza Ghasemi And Kayhan Kalhor. He Studied Musical Composition At The Conservatoire De Musique Du Québec À Montréal With Gilles Tremblay. In 1998 He Co-Founded Constantinople 1 A Montreal Based Ensemble Which Has Earned An International Reputation For Its Unique Juxtaposition Of Early Musical Sources And The Living Traditions Of The Middle East. Last Two Years Kiya Has Toured Intensively Canada Belgium Portugal Italy Spain Holland France Cyprus Lebanon Greece Hong Kong And Mexico. He Has Recorded Ten CDs For The ATMA Label And Has Created With Constantinople Over 20 Original Programs Performing Them At Some Of The Most Prestigious Festivals And Venues Such As Festival D'Aix-En-Provence France Festival De Musiques Sacrées De Fès Morocco Festival D'Ile De France Paris Metropolitan Museum New York Festival De Mexico En El Centro Historico Mexico And Vancouver Summer Festival Canada . From 2002 To 2005 He Was Involved In The International MediMuses Research Project On The History And Repertoire Of Mediterranean Music Land In Several Publishing And Recording Projects. As A Composer He Has Been Commissioned By UER CBC Calefax Wind Quintette And Nouvel Ensemble Moderne. He Is Currently A Board Member Of The Montreal Art Council And The President Of The Music Section. Ziya Tabassian Started Playing The Tombak A Persian Percussion At The Age Of 11. From 1994 To 2001 He Studied Western Classical Percussion With Julien Grégoire In Montreal And Has Completed A Bachelor Degree In Percussion Interpretation At The Université De Montréal. During Winter 2002 Ziya Went Back To Iran For Tombak Training With M. Bahman Rajabi And In 2003 He Completed A Residency At The Banff Centre For The Arts Where He Explored The Contemporary Music On The Persian Percussions. He Plays In Several Early Contemporary And World Music Ensembles And Is An Active And A Co-Fonder Member Of Both Constantinople Middle Age And Renaissance Music And Duo Prémices Soprano & Percussion . Ziya Has Performed In Several Concerts In Canada Mexico Germany The U.S.A. Greece Tunisia Notably With Hossein Omoumi Keyhan Kalhor Liu Fang Kronos Quartet En Chordais Studio De Musique Ancienne De Montréal And Caprice. He Has Received Several Grants From The Canada Council For The Arts And The Conseil Des Arts Et Des Lettres Du Québec. He Already Realised Many CDs In Duo With His Brother Kiya Tabassian And Constantinople On The ATMA Label And Recorded For Many Other Productions Such With The Kronos Quartet The Nouvel Ensemble Moderne And Lo'Jo. He Is Frequently Heard On CBC Radio And Radio-Canada. He Just Released His Solo CD Called TOMBAK On Ambiances Magnétiques Label.
