Elizabeth Catherine McAlpine (she/her), also known as Lizzy McAlpine (born September 21, 1999) is a vocalist, songwriter, and musician who hails just outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She studied songwriting at Berklee College of Music located in Boston before leaving in her junior year to pursue music full-time. In April 2020, at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, she started the Instagram #BerkleeAtHome streaming concert series. Her musical style has been described as "folk-focused", "folk-pop", and a blend of "jazz, pop, and R&B".
“ceilings” is the eighth track on the singer’s second album "five seconds flat". The track was performed previous to the album’s release during her tour with dodie, where Lizzy served as the opening act.
Lyrically, the song finds the singer-songwriter daydreaming about someone. There are several allusions to the situation being similar to, or even based on, an experience she’s had before with another person. She reveals in the outro this person is not real, which could mean she’s either completely making up this character or daydreaming about someone she has a crush on, but substantially changing who they are to fit into the narrative.
There’s a demo of the song available on SoundCloud.
